Yet another thing wrong with pop music

A dear friend of mine was commenting on our album yesterday. She comes from a Pop/Hip Hop background. Which is great. Whatever music you like, that’s up to you. I’m not saying by any means that you should listen to exclusively Metal + 19th Century Romanticism. But one of the comments she made reminded me about another thing wrong with pop music.

She had serious confusion about one of the songs starting out with one minute of instrumentals. For Metal, that’s nothing unusual. For pop music, that’s a serious WTF moment, as it’s never, ever done. And I’m quite serious. It is never, ever done in pop music. (It was done in the 80s. It’s not done anymore. She’s young).

I’ve heard Adele’s previous album. It’s wrist-slitting. I don’t like it. I’m not saying it’s bad. I just don’t like it. I got a pretty awesome life and I can’t really listen to someone sing depressing stuff for an hour. Regardless, I’m going to make another point – from start to finish of each song, Adele never takes a breath. It’s singing from the very start of the song to the very end.

Apparently, she sells like hot cakes. More power to her. But from a musical perspective, she’s the perfect example of another thing wrong with pop music. You might as well not even have musicians. They’re about as useful as a trap door on a lifeboat. Whereas Michael Jackson honored his musicians, nowadays, the trend has become more like Adele. As soon as the song starts, it’s “blah blah blah” and it’s “blah blah blah” up until the very end of the song. Where’s the musical break? I’m not saying songs have to have a guitar or a sax solo, but some nod to the musicians would be nice.

This is yet another reason I can’t listen to today’s pop music. I’m not going to pull any punches here. I don’t like it. It’s insulting to musicians.

By the way, I value everyone’s opinion. She’s a dear friend of mine and she buys a lot of music every year. So when she and another female friend of mine agreed on what their favorite song on the album was, I let Skitz know and Skitz and I decided to do that song as our third video. Skitz will be writing the script, and for the first time, I’m directing. He has a degree in Media Arts with the focus on Video Editing and mine is in History, although I used to work with a film company years ago. I do have plenty of experience both in front of and behind a camera so this 3rd video should be good.
