I know that I make my money online so it seems weird for me to write an article about taking breaks from online life. But for your sanity, I strongly suggest it.
I was on the train yesterday coming home from mixing a new waltz. I remember the old days on the train where people would actually have these things called “conversations.” Those are long gone. Nowadays, people just stare at their phones like zombies.
This creates a lot of really bad negative side effects. Mentally, people have very short attention spans. Emotionally, constant online life is emotionally draining. And physically, I see people with horrible postures because of their online addictions.
Taking breaks from online life should be a consistent part of your life
My wife and I take breaks all the time. When we go out to dinner, we leave our phones at home. That way nobody can even contact us, which is great.
Plus, there’s a whole world out there. I’ve made a point to myself to at least once a month, go out and take pictures. We also make a point to leave the country at least once a year.
Yes, I know not everyone can afford to do that. However, there are plenty of places within driving distance to you that are worth visiting. When we were young and broke, that’s what we did.
When we traveled, we had our phones off. Actually, my wife’s phone was on and mine was off. But she never used it, other than to take pictures. I took pictures with my phone because I’m paranoid about bringing my Canon and it breaking in another country.
Regardless, we’d spend over a week a year out of the country and the phones would be off. We were offline, and every time, we loved it.
Slow down and appreciate life
Online, everything’s happening so fast! If you blink, you’ll miss something important.
Offline, life is at the same pace humans have lived for however humans have been around. I don’t know know how long that is. I’m a musician, not an anthropologist.
Anyways, if I stayed online all the time, I’d never have the inspiration to write good music.
And speaking of good music, check out my waltz (assuming you like Classical music). I got another waltz coming out next month that’s even better than this one.

Speaking of car trips, these caves were an hour’s drive from our previous residence. That’s what I’m talking about. If you don’t have that much money, take a road trip. Look online for some neat places to visit nearby and visit them. And of course, turn off your phones except to take pictures. Today’s phones take really good pictures!
