Most things in life are not a big deal. “Don’t sweat the small stuff,” you’ve heard a thousand times. But do you practice it? If not, why not?
Bad health is a big deal. A good friend or a family member dying is a big deal. Some asshole cutting you off in traffic is not a big deal. Nor is Susy at work not really liking you. So what!
The older I get, the more I let things go that really don’t matter. My priorities have changed to my focus. And what’s not in my focus really isn’t that important.
Appreciating loved ones is important. Someone being an idiot is not. That’s because if it doesn’t involve my health, my loved ones, or my passion, I simply don’t give a flying fuck.
A “it’s not a big deal” attitude will make you happier
Let the bullshit slide and focus on what’s important. In an earlier article, Stella makes huge deals out of every day bullshit instead of focusing on what she should be focusing on. Needless to say, she’s miserable since she makes big deals out of things that shouldn’t be big deals.
This leads to a downward spiral. She manages to alienate “cool” people and attract losers. When you overreact to everything, functional people simply don’t want to be around you. So her boyfriends are either awful people or losers. So are the majority of her friends. Since she has such a low quality of friends, she’s now convinced most people are shitty.
It all starts with her freaking out about things that are not a big deal.
So, what is a big deal?
How about instead of freaking out about things, start working for something awesome? Like for instance, plan an awesome vacation. When was the last time you left the country? When was the last time you took a road trip?
Ironically, since she makes a big deal out of relatively minor things, major things go wrong. It’s simply because she lost the ability to differentiate between major and minor things.
When everything is a big deal, nothing is a big deal. Get it? Unfortunately for Stella, she doesn’t understand this concept.
About the featured image
Speaking of which, I need to practice what I preach. I talk about taking road trips, and I haven’t taken one since July. It’s now September.
I’m going to get the fuck out of here next weekend. This weekend though is a huge NFL week 1 party that there’s no way in hell I’m missing. Going to see some folks I really like.
This featured image is from Tahoe back from July.
