Live Long and Prosper

Spock from Star Trek would always say “live long and prosper.” If you think about it, it’s a pretty good saying. “Live long and prosper.” Let’s take a look what that really means.

Live long

So the first part is “live long.” That involves good health and a bit of luck. If you live in a high crime area, it’s in your best interest to move out as soon as possible. I could tell you that first hand. I’ve spent too many nights in my car with a loaded gun for protection. No, it wasn’t safe.

Assuming you don’t, the next part is not to get killed in a car wreck. That involves a lot of luck. Hopefully that other guy watches where the hell he’s going.

Don’t be obese. A little bit of extra fat is actually not bad. Obesity leads to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and a lot of other stuff you don’t want.

Let’s hope we don’t get cancer. A lot of it is luck. I know too many people who did things right who didn’t deserve it and still got it.

So the best we can do on that end is eat right and exercise. Because there is some luck involved, we can at least increase our odds.

…and Prosper

What does prosper mean to you? Get rich? Travel the world? Have a few fascinating, emotionally intimate friends?

Prosperity means different things to different people. However, we all know being broke sucks.

Maybe buying that brand new SUV isn’t such a good idea. Maybe you should have put that money in an index fund and let it grow and give you dividends. Plus, SUV’s waste gas, which costs money.

Traveling costs money. Friendships do not.

Our current friendships are wonderful. Prosperity for us means having enough money to say “fuck you” and walk out if an employer’s a dick. We’re in that position now, which is nice. I sincerely hope you are too.

To us, prosperity also means being able to travel. We leave the country once a year to a country we haven’t been to yet. 2014 it was the Dominican Republic. 2015, it was Spain. This year, I took the Mrs. to Alaska but we also stepped foot in the Yukon Territory and Victoria. She hadn’t been to Canada yet.

Next year, it’s Colombia. We already paid for everything. If sales pick up, we’ll also hit Italy next year. If not, it will be Italy in 2018.

So live long and prosper my friends. It’s a good saying. And tell me what you are doing for your health and also what prosperity means to you. Would love to hear what you say.
