If you’re not growing…

If you’re not growing, you’re dying. You should always be improving, whether mentally, physically, emotionally, or spiritually.

I remember back in high school reading a poem about an old man dying. He dies when he no longer has the urge to see what’s on the other side of the mountain.

Very symbolic. That poem has stuck with me forever. I don’t remember who wrote it though, so don’t know who to credit. I definitely understood the point of it.

Always continue learning

So today, I’ll be working with an interpretive dancer. I need to learn how to use a green screen. As you know, I wrote and edited the Darvulia video. Skitz directed it.

Of course, this was done live. And we’ll continue to do our Astral Eyes videos live. However, I do want to learn how to use a green screen for my concept videos. I already pay for Adobe Premier Pro. I might as well learn to use its primary features.

The dancer will dance to a shorter version of a piece I wrote. I haven’t gotten it orchestrated yet so you’ll just be hearing samples. It should still be pretty cool though as I watched her earlier works and recognized her talent. She’s a fire breather too, and if I like her in person, I’ll definitely hire her again. I need to figure out how to incorporate fire breathing into a future script.

The second thing I’m learning – I’m currently an intermediate pianist. Not acceptable. I do all my orchestration from a guitar. Of the great composers, only Berlioz did the same. Everyone else used a piano.

I’d love to be able to orchestrate from both a piano and a guitar. So, I’m intentionally writing all these piano ballads and nocturnes just to force myself to become better on the piano.

Another thing about continual learning

Too many people think the only place to get an education is from school. No. You can teach yourself a lot of stuff. And experience is truly the best teacher. Sure, schools can teach you concepts. But, can you apply them?

Don’t get me wrong. I would have loved to be formally trained in composition, orchestration, and counterpoint. I would have loved it. But it didn’t happen. I had to teach myself.

I’m using music and art as examples, but this can apply to any aspect of your life. Not just music and art. For health and weightlifting, I hired people to teach me correct form and also paid for dietary tips as I want to have a really good diet. You hear me say all the time that health should be your number one priority. That’s something I take very seriously.

Anyways, I’ll post the video Monday night or Tuesday morning after some serious editing. You’ll see my first works with a green screen.
