Art is a craft

art is a craft

I’m quickly learning that art is a craft. Like anything else, the more time you put into it, the better you will get.

I bring this up as an analogy to life. You put time into something, you will get results.

You want to be a good parent? Spend time with your kids. Give them something to talk about with their friends. Rather than buying them stuff, spend actual time with them.

So yes, this article isn’t just for artists. But I want to say something important here directly to artists.

Why it’s important to understand that art is a craft

My wife and I bought tons of art over the years. We already have enough art to have a decent sized auction.

I remember meeting a lot of artists. We’ve bought art both from artists and distributors.

I can tell you from experience that the artists who made it were the ones who spent time on it. And, very importantly, knew how to sell it.

How to make it

I met Joy Bergsma in person once. She talked about how to “make it” as an artist.

She’s a damn good artist, don’t get me wrong. But here’s the thing that stood out to me about her. She knew how to sell.

Bergsma has a successful career because she puts out quality art. And she’s aggressive when it comes time to sell it.

I’ve bought her cards long before I knew who she was. She told me how she’s able to get them in stores, and you know what? She has a damn good sales pitch.

So that’s the one-two punch – 1. Create good art. 2. Sell it. Too many artists are afraid of step 2.

For non-artists

Maybe you don’t want to be an artist, but you want to have artistic abilities. Well you know what? You can!

Since art is a craft, the more hours you put into it, the better you will get. I’ve heard a thousand times people say that they have no artistic talent whatsoever.

Bullshit! If your hands work, you can draw.

I know this from personal experience. I picked up guitar really fast because I’m naturally gifted at it. However, I’m not naturally gifted as an artist.

So rather than quitting, I looked up what to do about it online. Some lady (I wish I knew her name so I could give proper credit) said to draw lines and circles over and over again every day until they look good.

You know what? It works! I got so good at lines and circles that I just decided to say “fuck it, let’s go all the way!”

Now I’m a professional artist. It hasn’t replaced my day job quite yet but I’m already doing commissioned work.

What is a craft anyways?

A craft is a skill in doing or making something. If you make shoes, you’re a shoemaker. If you make art, you’re an artist.

With a craft, the more time you spend on your craft, the better you will get. That’s why an apprentice shoemaker isn’t as good as one who has been doing it for years. That’s why you have terms like “master craftsman.” A master craftsman has been doing it for years.

I’m well aware what I can do and what I can’t do in art. I can’t paint Pre-Raphaelite style quite yet. But I’m already damn good at pinups.

I’m good at pinups because I have an unfair advantage over my competition. I absolutely love women. Most guys don’t. Most guys are scared of women. I’m not. I’m fascinated by them.

So when you combine hard work, determination, and fascination, you’re going to get some pretty good results.

Find out what you love doing. Put time into it. Guaranteed that with love plus time, you’ll get results.
