Why Game of Thrones is good writing

Game of Thrones is good writing. I’m not talking about the books though. I’m talking about the television scripts.

Yes, it helps that the producers find exotic locations. It also helps that the producers manage to find highly talented barely known actors and actresses. I’m not going to go into that. I’m just talking about good writing.

Good writing is all about characters

The secret of good writing? Good character development. It doesn’t matter which genre because this applies to all genres. Focus on the characters first and foremost and everything else will fall in quite well.

I’ve watched Game of Thrones since Season 1. I’ve fallen behind a few times but we learned we could just watch the series from Amazon.

Here on out will have spoilers, so if you’re not caught up, you might want to stop reading here.

Think of Jaime Lannister for instance. At first, we hated him. Then the writers managed to develop him into a sympathetic character.

Same with Theon Greyjoy. First you met him, then you despised him, then you felt sorry for him, then you actually hoped he’d do the right thing for once.

That’s pretty fucking impressive! To be able to develop characters with that much depth – of course I’m taking notes.

Even let’s take Cersei Lannister. As much as we hated her, we still wanted her to do the right thing in the end of Season 7. Of course she didn’t. She let us down. She betrayed her people and even her brother. Cersei is so wrapped up in keeping power that she’d risk the entire human race for her own ends.

Characters that you love

And of course, you have to develop characters that you root for. Ned Stark, Tyrion Lannister, Rob Stark, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, etc. These are characters most folks root for.

Even with each of these characters, they all had flaws. Ned Stark’s good leads to his downfall. Tyrion is an alcoholic and hates himself because he’s a dwarf. We know he’d be fair and just and we get to see him even check Daenerys and risk his life to check his sister.

Rob Stark is too trusting. It leads to his death.

We get to see Jon Snow make some wrong choices. We all know he’d be better off if he stayed with his true love, the one that loved him so much that she missed.

And Daenerys. What a fascinating woman. You know that she has the potential to become a tyrant. The way she manages to check herself as she has a strong sense of vengeance. (Which considering her upbringing, could you blame her?)

Characters that you absolutely despise

One thing that Game of Thrones does better than anyone else – they create characters you hope to die. We cheered when Littlefinger finally got killed. And of course it was nice to see Sansa finally get her head out of her ass. And of course, it was nice to see Arya doing the killing.

Joffrey Baratheon was one of the most annoying characters ever. You celebrated his death. Then we realize Ramsey Bolton is even worse of a monster. I go into the video why Ramsey really bothers me (for personal reasons).

Also, read my article on which characters are Alphas in Game of Thrones. A few of them may surprise you.
